The Knole settee was designed in the early 1600’s and was the first “prototype” of what we call a sofa. In the past, multi person seating was a bench pushed against the wall for back support. The Sackville’s commissioned an upholstered settee when they purchased Knole, one of the largest English homes dating from the 12th Century, in 1605. Designed as a Royal throne, it featured high back and sides to protect from drafts and hinged, allowing the arms to be angled down for sleeping. This is a classic design that remains a staple in any setting.
